    Visual Smoke Alarm Program:

This information is through a member of Sertoma:

Through a Federal Grant, the Foundation for Safer Housing is able to offer free visual smoke alarms to the deaf and hard of hearing meeting certain financial requirements. The program is designed to offer protection to those who would otherwise have no protection. The alarms are free of cost and are simple to apply for. Just fill out the application. This program also serves people with income above the government's established poverty levels, but still find it difficult to afford these $200 smoke alarms along with the electrician bill to install them.

Stop WKRC-TV of Cincinnati from cutting back on closed-captioning!

    Dear NAD Supporter,

WKRC-TV of Cincinnati, Ohio decided last fall to caption all of their news programs. However, this past week WKRC-TV announced its decision to cut back on captioning of news programs.

The Ohio Association of the Deaf, Kentucky Association of the Deaf, and National Association of the Deaf agree that this cut back will withhold vital information, potentially lifesaving, from a the deaf and hard of hearing population.

Statistics indicate there are approximately 200,000 deaf and hard of hearing individuals in the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky area who rely on TV and not radio for important news information.

WKRC-TV's decision effectively segregates deaf and hard of hearing citizens from the rest of the community by not providing them with important and potentially lifesaving information and news.

The State Associations of Ohio and Kentucky as well as the NAD urge you to contact WKRC-TV and ask that they restore full captioning services to their entire news program.
    --------
Folks, the action item for protesting the cutback of captions by WKRC-TV is now up and active. Please write to WKRC-TV and ask them to not cut back on closed-captioning!
